8 ways to cope with tragedy
To all our friends,
It was a tragedy of unspeakable proportions. A double terror attack in the historic city of Barcelona, Spain. On August 17, 2017 a large van plowed into pedestrians on crowded Las Ramblas Avenue, killing 14 people and injuring 120 more.
The victims are from at least 34 nations, and sadly, 17 people remain in critical condition. Early the next day, another terror plot foiled in a nearby city of Cambrils left 5 terrorists dead. ISIS has claimed responsibility. This was Spain’s first terror attack with large scale fatalities since the 2004 bombings of commuter trains in Madrid that killed 191.
On August 12, a man linked to white-supremacist groups rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at a White nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing a young woman and injuring 19 others.
As we mourn those we lost, our prayers are lifted up for all the victims and their families. We have seen this too many times in recent years, and we cannot imagine the pain that loved ones must be experiencing.
This was an evil act of terror and hate. An attack on each one of us. An attack on our values. An attack on our way of life. What happened in Paris, Belgium, San Bernardino California, Orlando, Florida, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Manchester England, Charlottesville Virginia, and Barcelona Spain was a harsh awakening, jolting us into awareness that we are also mortal, and that life is precious. Fragile. Tomorrow is not promised.
In many of these tragedies, we are hearing inspiring stories of heroism by victims, first responders, and medical personnel. So many stories of strangers offering their homes to children, taxi drivers who offered free rides to the hospital.
We want to encourage everyone not to succumb to hopelessness or fear. There is a divine life force that connects us all, and intuitive people are sensitive to the feelings, grief, and suffering of others. Allow yourself to feel. Now is the time to join together, knowing love will win out over hatred. We never know what we are capable of until we are truly tested.
For the survivors, live a full life for all those who won’t have that opportunity now. You are a living tribute to their memory.
Here are some suggestions that could help you to cope with the shock and grief, and begin the healing process following a tragedy such as this.
1. Meditation and prayer – Find 10 or 20 minutes in the morning or during your day to do a simple meditation practice. This can help you stay calm and centered in the present moment, so you can take the next step.
2. Reach out and take action – Many people need support and comfort now. Visiting in person or speaking by phone is more personal than texting.
3. Join a support group – Be inclusive, embrace one another. Find a support group online or locally. It’s about building community and connecting with others at this difficult time.
4. Breathing exercises – During your day, take time out to breathe deeply for several minutes. Open your heart to receive the good of others, and send love to all those around you in need of healing.
5. Grief counseling – may be helpful to deal with anger and frustration, or if you are depressed.
6. Channel your anger and sadness – through a creative endeavor such as painting, writing, journaling, music, or dance. Singing is especially healing. (Don’t try to be an American Idol, this isn’t about talent). You may want to make a scrapbook as a way to honor your loved one’s memory.
7. Avoid self-medicating with alcohol and drugs – This can cloud judgment and block spiritual growth. Try simply walking, gentle exercise, massage or reiki (energy) healing to raise your vibration.
8. In time, try to find ways to forgive – Forgiveness is the most powerful step in the healing process, but don’t rush it. This isn’t easy, so take baby steps. Try to find your inner joy, faith and peace, even in the face of hopelessness. Fear cannot exist in the presence of love.
When we predict these events, we always make them public so that they may serve as a harbinger or warning to be more alert and aware. Sadly, these attacks are very difficult to prevent.

Just bought your book on Kindle. It’s really witty and full of wise advice.
